According to its historical, urban and geographical features, Požega belongs to the old settlements in Serbia. Archaeological excavations and other scientific research have proven the existence of settlements as early as the 26th century BC. Prince Miloš declared it a town in 1832, when it established its present architectural form with a circular square in the middle of the settlement. It was one of the first towns to have a regulation plan in Serbia along with electric power and post office, and later telegraph and a narrow gauge railway.

Požega is located in western Serbia in a vast and sunny valley, where the lower river basins of the rivers Skrapež, Moravica and Đetinja branch out forming the river Zapadna Morava (the Western Morava). The lowest zone of the settlement, the alluvial plain, with an altitude of 300 meters is closed from the north by the mountains Maljen and Divčibare, from the east by the Ovčar and Kablar massifs, Blagaj from the south, and Trešnjica from the west. Požega is one of the most important railway and road traffic hubs in this part of Serbia and beyond.
