Požega – Saint George monastery

You can download the GPX file HERE.

The monastery was built in the thirteenth century, at the same time as the church of Saint Achilles in Arilje, and was located on the defense line against the Patarenes (Bogomils). Very little is known about the early past of this monastery, except that it had its own frescoes, which were destroyed in the Turkish arson. The monastery was restored in 1808 by order of the leader Karađorđe. The first school in liberated Serbia began operating in the Godovici Monastery in 1832. At that time, the monastery had its own brotherhood and represented an important religious, educational and cultural center of Serbia. Today, this monastery functions as a church and is located in the village of Godovik, 8 kilometers from Požega.

The route that leads us to the shrine is relatively short, only 8.3 km, so it is an excellent choice for beginners without much experience and fitness. From the center of Požega we head towards the main road, and then we turn off onto the local, Godovički road. A slightly more noticeable climb begins at the 5th kilometer. We pass through the center of the village, all the way to the secluded monastery at the foot of the surrounding hills. We will enjoy the mountain freshness, silence and pleasant ambiance of the monastery.

There are no bicycle signs on the route, so we recommend downloading a .gpx file.
